Investigate the performance of a selected small business,preferably one you have working knowledge of or access to.

You should prepare a written reportof approximately 2.000 – 2,500 words that includes:

Business profile: components of the business, objectives of the business,internal and external factors affecting business performance, liabilitiesof owner-manager, competitor anlaysis, customer profile, stakeholder analysis, financial performance, ratios, staff turnover 1.1

You should use appropriate business tools to provide an analysis of the business e.g. SWOT, PESTEL, Porter’s Five Forces, Competitor Analysis, Positioning Map. 1.2

Identify actions to overcome weaknesses within the business.  You should justify your actions with appropriate reference to sources of business information e.g. Government statistics 2.1

Justify ways the business can strengthen existing performance and and expand into new business areas. Use appropriate business tools e.g. Ansof Matrix 2.2, 2.3

Critically assess the business’ existing aims and objectives, you should then make appropriate and justified revisions to these in order to incorporate the changes you have suggested earlier 3.1, 3.2

Present your proposed changes in the form of an action plan 3.3

Assess how the proposed changes are likely to impact on the business and its personnel 4.1

Outline how you plan to manage the changes made and monitor improvement over a given timescale 4.2, 4.3

Pass grade:

To gain a PASS grade students must satisfactorily meet all the assessment criteria referred to in the outline report specification above.

A pass grade is achieved by meeting all the requirements defined in the assessment criteria for pass for each unit.


Merit grade:
Merit grades are only awarded after students have met all the merit criteria described in  the assessed work. Failure to meet any merit criteria will mean that an overall merit grade cannot be awarded.

  • the appropriate structure and approach has been used :  To achieve this outcome your work should be presented in a coherent and engaging format.
