Report Part 2

This section of your report requires you to analyse “The Impact of Health and Safety polices on the delivery of health and social care”.

“Healthcare workers and care providers must adopt a sensible and proportionate management of risk when looking after their clients.

The provision of care and support should be tailored to meet the needs of the individual and should encourage them to do what they can for themselves. Often when assessing the care and support needs of an individual, everyday activities are identified that will benefit their lives, but also put them at some level of risk. This requires a balanced decision to be made between the needs, freedom and dignity of the individual and their safety”- HSE 2015

1.      You are required to consider the above statement when analysing how risk assessments may be used to inform care planning for individuals and how it may impact on organisational decision making.

Care assessments should enable people to live fulfilled lives safely, rather than be a mechanism for restricting their reasonable freedoms. Many care providers find it hard not to slip towards a risk adverse approach for a multitude of reasons, for example, resources, bad experiences and a fear of the consequences if things go wrong.

People who work in health and social care constitute a large and diverse workforce looking after a predominantly vulnerable population. Employees have the right to work in a healthy and safe workplace, and the people using services are entitled to care and support that is safe and takes their needs, freedom and dignity into account.

Managing these different needs can sometimes present unique and complex situations which can, if not effectively managed, result in serious harm to employees, people using care services and others.  This can raise isses/dilemmas that may link to a lack of resource or conflicting priorities.

2.      You must give an example and discuss dilemmas that may arise, or that you have encountered, when implementing health and safety policies and systems.

3.      You must also analyse the consequences of non-compliance with health and safety legislation within your organisation.

M1 You must demonstrate that you have looked at current policies and legislation and identified which are relevant to your organisation, how your own local policies were developed to meet national requirements, why these have been implemented, and explain the impact on your service if these had not been put into practice.

D1 To achieve D1 you should effectively synthesize the data collected, and justifying your conclusions when recommending actions within your report.

D3 To achieve D3 you need to critically reflect on the the dilemma and identirfy strategies for managing such issues.
