Purpose of this assignment The aim of this assignment is to check the knowledge of the learner regarding the working of an organisation and how to improve its performance by managing its activities, internal systems, processes and their relationships. Through this assignment the learner will demonstrate the ability to assess, evaluate, plan, design and monitor processes and procedures for an organisation.
Scenario The United Kingdom (UK) is home to the BBC with a vision to be the most creative organisation in the world! However, with the recent job cuts, change of location and negative media publicity of some of its famous staff, the BBC faces stiff competition from other organisations with similar functions. Therefore, the BBC is now under pressure to achieve better results and improve its image. You have been appointed as a consultant to help the BBC achieve better results. You have to create an independent report covering the objectives stated in the following tasks.
CREATE A REPORT COVERING THE POINTS STATED IN THE FOLLOWING TASKS
Task 1 (LO 1: AC1.1, AC 1.2 and AC 1.3)
- Evaluate the relationship between the processes and functions within BBC [AC1.1]
- Justify how the processes of BBC are mapped against its organisational goals and objectives [AC 1.2]
- List a minimum of 2 outputs and evaluate their quality [AC 1.3].
Guidelines for Task 1: Complete this task as part of your report using 500 words (+/- 10%) ‘To evaluate’ means to establish whether something is good enough by answering 5 simple questions: what, when, why, how and who? This means you would need to identify few processes and functions within BBC and establish any relationship(s) between them Justify means to explain by providing evidence, why and how the vision, mission, goals and objectives follow a logical connection (mapping) to any processes that exist in BBC Refer any book on Strategic Management, Business Strategy and Organisational Behaviour from the library or internet for the clarification of basic concepts regarding structure, culture and functions of organisation. Hand-outs and books from previous terms could also be used.
Task 2 (LO2: AC 2.1, 2.2, 2.3 and 2.4)
- Choose one of the responsibilities of the BBC that you like and want to improve [AC 2.1]
- List all the stakeholders that need to be satisfied for this area of responsibility [AC 2.2]
- Develop and list your objectives for this area of responsibility according to the SMART principle [AC 2.2] 4. Develop a plan to achieve the objectives a. List all the activities that you think are needed to achieve the objectives for your chosen area of responsibility [AC 2.1]
- List steps to monitor and control the activities established above [AC 2.4] c. Incorporate in your plan, the time, budget and standards of quality (established by BBC) for all activities/steps [AC 2.3]
- Justify your plan [AC 2.3, AC 2.4]
Guidelines for Task 2: Complete this task as part of your report using 750 words (+/- 10%) You can visit the website of BBC (www.bbc.co.uk) for more information In your plans you are required to list activities that help to achieve the objectives for your area of responsibility and list steps to monitor and control the above activities All activities and steps in your plan should be bound by time, budget and standards of quality established by BBC. The standards can be taken from the BBC website and mentioned in your plan.
Task 3 (LO 3: AC 3.1, AC 3.2, AC 3.3 and AC 3.4)
- Study the quality standards, monitoring and controlling systems within the BBC [AC 3.1]
- Propose a new system of how to monitor and control the quality standards within BBC. You can choose one or more of systems under TQM, ISO 9000/EN29000 and adapt them for the BBC to monitor and control the quality [AC 3.1]
- Justify how your new system would sustain a quality culture [AC 3.2] 4. Recommend how your system would be used to achieve the Objectives and Goals of the BBC by bringing improvement over their existing system [AC 3.3] 5. Explain the wider consequences of implementing your system within the BBC [AC 3.4].
Guidelines for Task 3: There is no word limit for this task but you are expected to write a minimum of 250 words You may use diagrams to explain your system Research how TQM, ISO principles are used for system creation. Then choose one and adapt it for your answer To justify ‘quality culture’, you need to explain how your system would create continuous monitoring, evaluation and developments for improvement Following books could be used for more explanation of Quality: o Quality management 2 nd edition by Donna C S Summers (Chapter 11) o Operations and Quality Management by Samuel K M Ho (Chapter 6) o Dale B G – Managing Quality – 2nd Ed. (Prentice Hall, 1994)
