Assignment Scenario/case study
You have just been appointed to the role of senior consultant within the area of Business Development for one of the UK’s leading FT 500 companies, Whitbread plc. Whitbread plc has a diversified portfolio of businesses, from food, to accommodation and coffee, serving twenty five million customers per month. Its coffee brand, Costa is the UK’s largest chain and its hotel brand, Premier Inn is the largest budget hotel chain in the country.
Whilst based firmly in the UK, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Mr. Andy Harrison is very keen to capture the high growth potential of newly emerging markets. Senior Management feel that the UK market is somewhat nearing saturation point in terms of market expansion and are mindful to maintain existing high growth rates to keep shareholders satisfied. Whitbread plc has already successfully entered the Chinese market with over 350 coffee outlets and are keen on expanding this successful formula abroad for both its coffee and hotel businesses

You have been directed to select 1 of these geographic regions for analysis.
The Director of Business Development has asked you to prepare a business report on the selected geographic region together with an assessment of the existing levels of competition.
You must analyse the company’s general and competitive environments and put forward key recommendations as to Whitbread’s international expansion. The overall strategic goal being to achieve long term growth opportunities for Whitbread.
Conduct a PEST analysis on 1 of the Geographic regions listed above, examining how these factors may affect Whitbread Plc if they choose to enter this market. (40 marks)
Choosing either the coffee or the hotel business examine and evaluate the level of competitive rivalry and the threat from substitute products. (There is no need to conduct Porter’s 5 forces analysis) (20 marks)
Draw conclusions as to the issues that you have analysed and put forward key recommendations as to how Whitbread should proceed in the future in terms of their international expansion.

Where you are asked to: analyse, evaluate and recommend in a task it is important that your answers are not descriptive in nature but should provide clear evidence of a deeper understanding of the issues surrounding the task under consideration. Your paper must comply with the business report format and the Harvard referencing guidelines. There is no correct number of academic references to be utilised as the student must draw on as many references as required to provide a high quality answer. However, a minimum of 8 academic sources are expected, and a majority of these should be current, internationally peer reviewed articles/journals or accredited textbook references. Sources such as Wikipedia are not accepted.
You must be mindful that marks will be allocated based on the level of information and understanding and on your ability to define, explain, apply, analyse and evaluate the key concepts.

To achieve a pass level mark. A typical answer would be:

To achieve a mark typical of a good quality academic degree (60+) In addition to the requirements to achieve a pass mark, a typical answer would include:
A good explanation of how the chosen organisation is both governed and structured, together with a sound theoretical underpinning. In terms of PEST analysis, there would be a good understanding of the function of this tool. PEST would be applied to the selected geographic region, with an adequate assessment of the impact these factors would have on the chosen organisation. The answer would be at times quite insightful as to the environmental factors present in the chosen geographic region.
Regarding the competitive environment, there would be a good information base, detailing actual competitors and substitute products, together with a good evaluation of the threats facing the chosen organisation. Insightful answer at times, with reference to a number of leading trends and developments within the chosen sector. Good use of secondary sources evident.
To achieve a mark typical of a top quality academic degree (70+) explanation, analysis and evaluation would be of a very detailed, informed and highly relevant nature. There would be an excellent information base and very high level of understanding of the various topics. There would be a very good understanding of the concept of PEST, with a detailed assessment of the impact on the chosen organisation. In terms of the competitive environment there would be a very good information base and evaluation of threats facing the organisation. The answer would be very insightful covering all pertinent trends and developments within the chosen sector. Work would be professionally presented, demonstrating excellent intellectual originality.
