The Contemporary Hospitality Industry
Purpose of this assignment
Learners will explore the dynamic characteristics of hospitality, concentrating on current topical issues and future trends and developments, building a range of skills including research and the analysis of information, justification of ideas, evaluation and critical thinking.
Scenario – Individual Assignment
The hospitality sector includes all businesses that provide food, beverages, and/or accommodation services. This includes restaurants, pubs, bars and clubs, hotels, contract catering, and hospitality services.
The hospitality and tourism sector employs seven percent of the working population, or one in every 14 jobs. In terms of gross value added (GVA), 1 the sector contributed £40.6bn to the UK economy in 2011, or  4.2 percent of the country’s total GVA. The sector’s workforce currently accounts for 2,076,000 jobs, increasing by 0.7 percent between 2010 and 2011, which is higher than the average for the economy as a whole (0.5 percent). As the sector’s
workforce continues to grow so does its relative importance to the UK economy. However, this growth is not uniform across the UK; in Northern Ireland the workforce has grown by more than seven percent following huge investment in tourism.
The expected rise in recruitment before the London 2012 Olympic and  Paralympic Games did not happen, suggesting that any recruitment was localized and that employers managed extra demand using existing staff.
The demand for graduates is expected to grow as 69,000 more managers are expected to be needed over coming years.
The majority of large businesses within the industry advertise their commitment to environmental issues, their active involvement in the communities in which they operate, and their charitable donations. Organisations are keen to demonstrate that they can further their business objectives while still ‘doing the right thing’.
