Introduction

One of the best ways to understand Managing Activities to Achieve Results is to apply different concepts and techniques to an activity in an organisation that you know well.  This assignment provides exactly that opportunity.  We want you to take some of the theoretical concepts and perspectives that you have studied so far in the course and use them to describe and analyze a coherent element of an organisation.

You are required to submit an individual report for this compulsory assignment.  You should not collaborate with other students.  Plagiarism is a serious offense and will be dealt with accordingly.

This assignment must be submitted in accordance with the programme regulations and by the date given.  You should note that university regulations state that late submission without due cause will result in a mark of 0%.

Task

For an organisation of your choice you are required to produce a report showing how it manages activities to achieve results.

The report should be structured as follows:

1.    Evaluate the importance of business processes in delivering outcomes based upon business goals and objectives
1.1     Describe the structure and culture of an organisation and evaluate the inter-relationships between the different processes and functions of an organisation (Assessment Criteria 1.1)
1.2     Identify the mission, aims and objectives of an organisation and analyse the effect of these on the structure and culture of the organisation (Assessment Criteria 1.2)
1.3     Define the methodology to be used to map processes to the organisation’s objectives and functions and evaluate the output of the process and analyse quality gateways (Assessment Criteria 1.3)
2.    Develop plans for their areas of responsibility and implement operational plans
2.1     Develop plans which promote goals and objectives for own area of responsibility and ensure plans are consistent with legal, regulatory and ethical requirements (Assessment Criteria 2.1)

4.1     Carry out risk assessments as required by legislation, regulation and organisational requirements and ensure appropriate action is taken (Assessment Criteria 4.1)
4.2     Identify health and safety regulations and legislation applicable in specific work situations and ensure these are correctly and effectively applied (Assessment Criteria 4.2)
4.3     Systematically review organisational health and safety policies and procedures in order to ensure they are effective and that they comply with the appropriate legislation and regulations (Assessment Criteria 4.3)
4.4     Ensure practical application of health and safety policies and procedures in the workplace (Assessment Criteria 4.4)

To achieve each outcome a learner must demonstrate

Student Guidelines

1. You should write this assignment by answering each task and each task’s criteria in turn using the task outcome and the criteria as a heading.

2. You should use diagrams and tables of figures where appropriate ensuring that you reference their source.

3. You should include a bibliography using the Harvard referencing system.

4. All tasks must be completed in the word limit of 2500-3000 words excluding table of figures, diagrams and appendices.

5. The report should be word-processed.

6. Throughout your report you should underpin your empirical findings with theories from the literature showing how practice corresponds to or deviates from theories.

7. In some cases project management might not be explicit but implicit. You may therefore have to observe how projects are conducted. The search for evidence may entail talking to senior managers, examining company documents and records (with permission), searching media archives etc.

8. You may wish to consult your tutor with initial proposals concerning a potential organisation you wish to study.

 






Performance Criteria

The assessment of this unit involves learners’ in applying different techniques to manage activities in a work place to achieve results.  Selection of an appropriate activity in an organisation is vital for this study as it must provide the learner with sufficient scope to ensure that every aspect of the assessment is addressed. Learners must demonstrate an understanding of the subject area as evidenced by applying the theories to a business situation in the organisation.

Assignment will be graded as a PassMerit or Distinction.


Pass
·         The assignment covers all sections of the report and meet all the assessment criteria
·         Describe relevant techniques to manage activity and ensure the activity can achieve result
·         Provide relevant suggestions to the organisation
·         Assignment has met deadline


Merit
·         As for a pass but with more detailed and analytical responses
·         Demonstration of a detailed understanding of different approaches to manage activities
·         An analysis that shows insight and some originality with respect to knowledge of techniques which an organisation can employ.
·         Content is presented in a logical and well-structured manner
·         Use clear and concise language
·         Proper supporting appendices and academic underpinning


Distinction:
·         As for a merit but showing sophisticated and in-depth insights of a high standard in different approaches to manage activities
·         The candidate has demonstrated evidence of the ability to synthesise and evaluate the most appropriate techniques
·         All tasks have been completed to a very high standard, and the content of the report has been selected with consistent success and showing a high degree of analysis
·         Demonstrate personal insight around the subject in the conclusion
·         The presentation and style of the report is outstanding
